The ruble (Adyghe: Адыгэ роублиза; ISO-code ADR) is the currency of Adygea. The symbol for the ruble is Аруб. It is divided into 100 kap'ejha ("кoпIеджхэ", singular: кoпIедж).

History Edit

From the collapse of the Soviet Union until July of 1992, the Soviet ruble was the circulated currency in Adygea. New banknotes from Russia were also circulated in Adygea, but they were replaced by currency issued by the Federal Bank of Adygea in July 1992. The first post-Soviet Adygean ruble was assigned ISO-code ADR and exchanged at the rate of 1 Adygean ruble = 10 Soviet rubles. It took about a year later before the ruble became the official currency of the country.

The first ruble, which suffered from high inflation rates, was replaced in December 1996 by the second Adygean ruble, at a rate of 100,000 old rubles = 1 new ruble.

Banknotes Edit

In 1992, the Federal Bank of Adygea issued the first series of Adygean ruble banknotes, in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50. The second series, in 1996, introduced the 100-ruble banknote.

All ruble banknotes issued by the Federal Bank continue to be legal tender. As of 2007, the banknotes of early series can rarely be found in circulation.
